SGPA to CGPA Explained
Published on March 1, 2026 • Academic Guide
If you are a college student, you likely receive an SGPA at the end of every semester. But your final degree will reflect your CGPA. Let's understand how they are connected.
What is SGPA?
SGPA stands for Semester Grade Point Average. It is the weighted average of the grade points obtained in all subjects in a single semester.
What is CGPA?
CGPA stands for Cumulative Grade Point Average. It is the weighted average of all the SGPAs obtained in all semesters completed so far.
How to Convert SGPA to CGPA?
You cannot simply average the SGPAs (e.g., (SGPA1 + SGPA2) / 2) unless the total credits for both semesters are exactly the same. The correct method uses credits as weights.
CGPA = (SGPA1 × Credits1 + SGPA2 × Credits2 + ...) / (Credits1 + Credits2 + ...)
This ensures that a semester with more credits (more workload) has a higher impact on your final CGPA than a semester with fewer credits.
