CGPA for Indian Universities
Published on March 1, 2026 • Academic Guide
Grading systems in India have shifted from Percentage to CGPA in the last decade. Here is how major institutions handle it.
1. CBSE (Class 10)
The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) was one of the first to introduce CGPA in schools.
- Scale: 10.0
- Conversion Formula: Percentage = CGPA × 9.5
2. Delhi University (DU)
DU follows the Choice Based Credit System (CBCS).
- Scale: 10.0
- Passing Grade: 4.0
- Formula: Percentage = CGPA × 9.5
3. Mumbai University
Mumbai University has used different formulas over the years.
- 7-Point Scale (Old): Percentage = (CGPA × 7.14) + 11
- 10-Point Scale (New): Percentage = CGPA × 7.25 (for some courses) or Percentage = CGPA × 10 (rarely, usually 9.5 is safe bet for jobs unless specified).
Note: Always check your official mark sheet for the specific formula applicable to your batch.
4. VTU (Visvesvaraya Technological University)
For engineering students in Karnataka:
- Formula: Percentage = (CGPA - 0.75) × 10
Most employers in India accept the standard CGPA × 9.5 conversion unless the university specifies otherwise.
